In our first blog post I warmly introduce ourselves to you (Antonia and Samantha) and would like to give you a little insight into how we came to launch a store, an English one, which draws it's inspiration from the Danish concept of Hygge [hoo-gah]. For those of you who are not familiar with Hygge (have you been living under a rock for the last few months?) it is a term that, in the very distant past, originated from Norwegian but has been adopted by the Danes and woven into their identity. It does not have a direct translation into English but words that contribute to it's meaning are, cosiness, security, happiness, relaxation, comfort, togetherness, simplicity. It is more of a broader concept that encapsulates feelings, letting ones guard down and being happy in the moment. In that sense we can see that the English are already familiar with Hygge, we just never had a word for it before. We all know that the things in life that really make us happy are the simple things like spending quality time with loved ones, eating good food, curling up by the fire on a rainy day with a good book and a blanket: these kind of things give us a good feeling deep down inside.
Regularly topping world happiness polls, Denmark is the focus of much media interest as to how their lives can be so closely related to the their European counterparts and yet... happier. Meik Wiking from The Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen (http://www.happinessresearchinstitute.com/people) and author of best selling 'Little Book of Hygge' (available in our store here ...) believes that the link between hygge and happiness may be no coincidence. In his book he states that '...we use names to capture that feeling of cosiness, warmth and togetherness, to shape it into a more fixed concept, and eventually, we develop a phenomenon that marks our unique cultural traits.' Perhaps then, one of the reasons the Danes are so happy is that they are able to identify and create special moments, which connect to our deep primitive needs, without considering those moments to be anything more than everyday life?
In our website we want to create a little corner of the internet where people can visit to find a moment of Hygge. Our blog and social media channels will be updated each week with ideas and thoughts that aim to inspire you to make time and find ways to create hygge in your life. We have added a store to our website which we look forward to filling with items that fit the bill of 'indulgent but not excessive,' think sharing platters for meals with friends, candles for instant hygge in any area of your home, cosy socks for relaxing with your family. Please mark us in favourites and come back regularly. We welcome comments and communication...
